The Carrot Stick (for use in Levels 1, 2, 3, 4 and beyond)
The Carrot Stick acts as an extension of your arm - not as a whip. It's non-flex design gives you more feel, accuracy, and versatility when teaching your horse. Includes a leather loop at one end for attaching the Savvy String and a rubber handle for a non-slip, comfortable grip. People often look at me funny and ask why on earth is this called a 'Carrot Stick'? It may seem like a silly name, but the meaning behind it is very important as we learn to be more effective with horses.
Throughout the ages people have known the advantage of using sticks with animals. There are different kinds of sticks... shepherd sticks for sheep, sticks for cattle, sticks for elephants, sticks for pigs...and sticks for horses.
Usually the sticks used for horses are some kind of whip, they are used to stimulate a horse more than anything and you've probably observed many horses liven up when a stick is in view, but immediately revert to their unresponsive behavior when it's gone! The same is true for fear, there are many horses that become extremely nervous if a whip is even carried, and outright fearful when it's used. Why is this so common?
From years of observation, I believe this happens when people think of sticks and whips in terms of punishment and horses are extremely perceptive creatures. A stick amplifies your attitude. If you are aggressive and forceful, the stick will make you more so, that's why number one of the Six Keys of Success is ATTITUDE.
There are two kinds of attitudes in horse people. Take trailer loading. One approach is the 'give him lots of carrots' attitude, and the other extreme is the, 'I'll make him do it with the stick' attitude. I encourage people to find the middle of these two extremes and become assertive, thus, the 'Carrot Stick.'
The Carrot Stick is not a whip, it's simply an extension of my arm. I can pet a horse with it, I can teach a horse to not be afraid of having his legs, ears, and other defensive spots touched. I can use it to teach a horse to yield from physical pressure (Porcupine Game) or implied pressure (Driving Game), and teach it faster than if I use only my hands. I can attach a 6-foot Savvy String and extend my reach to 10 feet'.
Horses know they are bigger and faster than we are. I've found that we can gain a psychological advantage with a horse if we prove we can physically out-maneuver him. With the Carrot Stick, I can stand by the side of a horse and touch from his whiskers to the tip of his tail in the wink of an eye, giving him the impression that I'm faster and bigger than he is!
The Carrot Stick helps me to increase my personal space beyond my arms reach, teach my horse about supporting reins when riding, teach him to stop and turn without contact with the reins, improve my independent seat, develop correct riding dynamics; the uses are infinite! The unique combination of design, material and workmanship is like nothing else. Because I couldn't find this design on the market, it was added to our manufactured items, hand-made by our Manufacturing Team.
6-foot Savvy String (for use in Levels 1, 2, 3, 4 and beyond)
The 6 foot Savvy String is made from 1/4 inch Horseman's Braid and has 1001 uses such as extending the reach of your Carrot Stick, riding with one rein, making and riding in a "Cherokee Bridle", practicing your knot-tying, leading your horse, tying your dog... Includes a looped end and a latigo popper. Let us know the most unusual use of your Savvy String!
These tools allow for the clearest communication, and can accelerate progress times ten!
22-foot Line (for use in Levels 2, 3, 4 and beyond)
This length of line is for advanced ground skills, allowing you to gain respect from greater distances. It is also a great tool for allowing more sensitive or scared horses to drift.
The 22-foot Line is made from 1/2-inch Horseman's Braid and has a 2-inch ring braided into one end, allowing instant release and reinforcement when teaching horses to yield from pressure.
Includes a carabiner clip for attachment to the Halter and a latigo popper.
45-foot Line (for use in Levels 3, 4 and beyond)
The 45-foot Line is designed to allow you to gain even more respect from greater distances (Level 3), and is ideal for dealing with wild or unstarted horses (Level 4+). It allows the horse greater drift while communicating your suggestions instantly and clearly. The lay of this 3/8-inch diameter, nylon lariat has been deliberately softened for horse handling. It has life, sensitivity, lightness, and is fitted with a brass hondo for slip and release. Includes a carabiner clip for attachment to the Halter.
